SUSANNA MOODIE & J.W. DUNBAR MOODIE
PLAQUE TEXT
Susanna Moodie and her husband John Wedderburn Moodie were two prominent Belleville writers in the mid-19th century. While John was better known as sheriff of Victoria District and later Hastings County, he assisted Susanna in her writing, wrote his own book, and contributed essays to literary magazines. The couple lived in Moodie Cottage on Belleville's west side. In the spirit of the times, they were dabblers in the occult, attending seances and attempting to communicate with the departed. This monument, originally in the Belleville Cemetery, also records the deaths of two of their children.

Comment: The plaque stands next to the top of a tombstone which has been removed from Belleville Cemetery. Engraved in the stone on the reverse side are these words: "John Strickland drowned in the Bay of Quinte June 18, 1844 age 5 y'rs 8 mo's. George Arthur, died Aug. 8, 1840 age 1 month. Children of J. W. & S. S. Moodie."
