MARCHMONT DISTRIBUTION HOME 1875-1925
PLAQUE TEXT
From 1875 to 1925, about 10,000 orphaned, abandoned or impoverished British children were brought to this Marchmont Home by Annie MacPherson and her associates from the workhouses, industrial schools and the streets of Britain, to be placed as indentured farm workers or domestics.
Some children encountered heavy labour demands on the farms with difficult masters; others were received into loving family conditions. Many of the home children were educated, overcame loneliness and prejudice, raised families and went on to successful careers, becoming proud Canadians and making a solid contribution to their new country.
