ROY BONISTEEL
May 29, 1930 - August 16, 2013
Day after day, rain, sunshine, snow or cloud, Roy Bonisteel sits on a park bench at Quinte West's Trent Port Marina, ready to read aloud from an open book. Of course, he is a lifesize statue, but there is no mistaking his mane of hair. He was a master storyteller, and his tales of life on the farm in the Trenton area were, and still are, always warmly received. For all his national fame as a respected journalist and broadcaster, he was truly a "son of the soil" of his beloved Quinte region. In his honour, his family and friends have constructed a Roy Bonisteel Garden on the waterfront at Trent Port Marina.
PLAQUE TEXT:
He taught us the importance of humanity and compassion by compelling us all to examine our values, our spirituality, and our beliefs. In leading by the example of his generosity, Roy gave his time and talent to every worthy cause that came to him. He hosted CBC's long running television show 'Man Alive', was recipient of the Order of Canada, and after enjoying an illustrious career in newspapers, radio and television became a citizen court judge. Roy's natural talents and willingness to share them, his reverence of the written word and the truth it could reveal combined to make him one of our brightest lights, known the world over. Welcome to the garden where we can all remember one of Trenton's most beloved sons.

The garden was inspired by Quinte West's Angela Smylie and came to fruition with the help of Roy's daughter Lesley Bonisteel and the assistance of his many friends, admirers and residents who are named on the plaque below.
